Ricky asks to play with his friends all the time. We play with his twin friends once a week, but he wants to play with other boys too. I thought having a birthday party for him would let me off the hook for a while and he thought a party was a great idea. I found an idea for cupcakes online that I wanted to give a try and thought it would be cute for his party, but that left me doing things backwards. Instead of coming up with a theme for the party and then a dessert to go with that, I had a dessert for which I needed to find a theme. I was stumped so I contacted my old roommate (and fabulous party planner) Lenette who got me going in the right direction. Then as I was bouncing my ideas off my groovy friend Shanae, she showed me the blueprint for a “Deluxe Kid Wash” and the party was born (it will be discussed in my next post).
Now I know that was a long, and perhaps difficult to follow, paragraph, but it is the only way to understand why Ricky named his fifth birthday his “Car Wash Birthday.” Ricky waited eagerly as Kevin constructed the Car Wash. It was finished a couple of days early but I wouldn’t let him give it a try until his actual birthday. He was in pig heaven when we finally turned the water on!
Even his door decorations have steamers to resemble a car wash (Rusty is mesmerized by these streamers every time the swamp cooler comes on and makes them blow).
His cake was either going to be the Scooby Doo Van or Filmore from the movie Cars. Ricky chose Filmore, so I did the best I could.
Billy was awfully sick last week. His symptoms were similar to those that Cousin Danny had and Danny ended up spending 2 days in the hospital for dehydration. Danny came home well but we were very concerned about Billy. I didn’t hear Billy say anything all day Thursday – a first! He latched his arms around Kevin’s neck and didn’t let go. Billy didn’t walk, he didn’t talk, he just laid there, staring and silent except the whimpering that was usually followed by vomit. It was so sad and creepy! Kevin worked from home with Billy attached to him for a few days. He still isn’t 100% but he is greatly improved. Here he is laying on my lap during Ricky’s birthday dinner.
Ricky wanted to eat the part of the cake with his name on it.
We opened presents first thing in the morning (before 7 am, thank you very much) and Ricky played with his Rocket Ship, Space Station, and Moonwalker all day. Grandmama got him what he calls his Lego Truck and that has been really fun too. Not sure why I didn’t take pictures of him opening his presents. Huh. Other than Sick Billy, it was a very nice beginning to Ricky’s birthday celebration.
