I’m big on goals. I love making big ones, little ones, silly ones … and I never go without New Year’s Resolutions. Mine are usually something to challenge myself with throughout the year and I get to re-evaluate how I did at the end of the year, which I also adore doing. Call me a nerd, I don’t mind.
I want my boys to understand the value of goal setting and New Year’s Goals are easy to explain. So that’s what I did over our pizza dinner last night. I told them how fun it is to challenge yourself to do something and how neat it feels to accomplish that challenge and how that’s called setting a goal. I was amazed at how quickly all three of the older boys picked it up.
Ricky set a goal to beat episode (or level, I forget which) 5 on his Star Wars game. Since he’s been working on it for a while and is still on episode 1, I thought that was a great challenge.
Billy wants to learn how to play soccer this year. Good goal, but it makes me sigh. Do I really have to become a soccer mom?
And Rusty, without any prompting, joined right in and said he wanted to learn how to ride a bicycle. Cool.
I told the boys that one of my goals to was play more games with them … not board games, but sports-like games. Things like jump rope or HORSE or even just playing more catch in the backyard. Ricky slumped and said, “Oh, nooooo!”
Yep, son. I’m going to FORCE you to like some sporty-type playing … (can you hear my evil laughing?)
