The State of Utah is encouraging a mass earthquake drill tomorrow. Ricky’s school is doing something and our ward at church is using it as an opportunity to test how well we do in relaying the need for help. Personally, I’ve used it as an opportunity to prepare our little family a little better for emergencies.
Yesterday, Kevin pulled out our 72 Hour Kits (one backpack for each of us) and I went through and took out old food and updated clothes and diapers and took note of things we were missing.
For family night tonight, we refilled the kits with food and the other missing things. We also talked about earthquakes and fires and our family meeting spots. We also went over calling 911 with Ricky and Billy.
Ricky is excited about this practice drill, but seems a bit more concerned about “after shakes” than the actual earthquake itself.
Tommy and Rusty thought our practice of “Drop! Cover! Hold On!” was hysterical. As the family was crawling toward the dining room table, these two were just giggling and giggling.
Billy was thrilled to get a lesson with the telephone since the extent of his phone usage is “Hey, Billy! Could you please bring me my cell phone?”
But my favorite part of this emergency preparedness event happened last night…
Since the food in our kits wasn’t really bad (okay, the animal crackers were gross, but otherwise…okay), we had a smorgasbord of 72 Hour Kit food for dinner. I laid it all out on the bar to let the kids choose from … pudding cups and trail mix and fruit cups and chicken salad and crackers and juice boxes and some cookies. Then I called the boys to dinner.
As Ricky came into the kitchen, he stopped suddenly. He gazed longingly at the bar and then, almost reverently said,
“Wow! It’s junk food for dinner!”
There you go.
