Antelope Island

Kevin finally got a job so for one last hurrah before he had to start work, we took the boys out to Antelope Island.

I love living so close to Antelope Island.  There is so much to see and do over there and it just feels like my own personal State Park!

We started our day by hiking the Lady Finger Hike.  It had the potential to be a wonderful hike, except for one thing.  The spiders.  Ew, ew, ew.

They were everywhere and HUGE!  Early on, before we realized how bad they were, Billy took the lead just as we entered a narrow path with shrubs on each side.  He suddenly let out a girlie scream and started flinging his arms around and around as though he was trying to get a bee off!  I thought he had been bit or stung … nope.  Just walked through a spider web.  After that, Kevin took the lead and used a little stick to clear the path.

The boys wanted to quit and go back but I wouldn’t let them.  I thought it would be good for them to press on.  The spiders weren’t jumping on us, they were just hanging on their webs.  I tried to think of all of them as being Charlotte from “Charlotte’s Web.”  They were just trying to decide what to write in their web.

We finally got to a spot that was open and we could all stand together and talk.  All of a sudden, Tommy starts flinging is arms around like crazy and then his feet and legs got going so fast that he actually fell on his behind!  He thought he had a spiderweb on him – but it was only a string from his cut-off shorts!  The boys might have been a little freaked out.

I got a little freaked out as we headed back to the car.  Kevin was leading and called the boys to a stop.  He told me to stay back.  He was good to do so.  A big old snake was in the path and taking its time leaving.  I’ll take the swarms of spiders any day over that big snake!

We found another hike with a few less creepy crawlies and had a much better time!

Bobby thinks he is finished with the backpack carrier for hiking.  If his brothers can walk it, he can walk it.  And he probably can – just at a much slower pace.

My boys really enjoy our hikes – as long as it isn’t too hot.  And there aren’t too many spiders.

I really like seeing my boys explore nature.  Dang, they are cute!

We were going to do Buffalo Point, but it was getting hot and the hiking isn’t as much fun when it is too hot.

Kevin and the two older ones when ahead…

All the boys know that they have to help Bobby along on these hikes and I hope I never forget images like this one …

I love my little men!

Even though it was too warm to hike, we weren’t done with Antelope Island yet.  We headed out to the ranch to let the boys explore there.   As we drove, we found the bison.  A big part of the herd was hanging out along the road.

At the ranch, the boys all gave roping a try – after their dad showed them how…

The ranch has old buildings to explore, like the bunk house and ice house.  It also has a big barn and some old water pumps.

We are still a happy couple!

There is a little wooded area by the ranch with a small stream and some fallen trees.  The boys did not get tired of climbing and exploring through that area.

And that was our Antelope Island summer adventure.
