WA Trip 4: Service Project

Since we were so close to Kevin’s Grandpa and Grandma Pendleton’s home (Grandpa Dick and Grandma Evelyn), it was decided that we should do some work for them.  There was a deck and some benches to be stained, leaves and sticks to be picked up, rain gutters to be cleaned, etc.  My kids were done after about 4.2 minutes.

But the adults still had work to do.  My work consisted of keeping my boys occupied until it was time to make some lunch.  At times I would have happily traded for Kevin’s paint brush.

It was nice to be doing something for Grandpa and Grandma.

The biggest challenge for me was the unfenced yard and extremely fast and busy road in front of the house.  Grandpa has a big backyard, but Poppy was working out front and my boys knew it!

The big boys went on a few retrieval missions for me …

There was the hose, a power washer, and Kevin’s two uncles to entertain the boys as well.  One of the uncles used the power washer to get a ball out of the tree and one thing led to another …

The work was finished, things looked good, and people got a chance to do some visiting.

Hi, Grandpa Dick!

Hello, Aunt Wendi!

A few pictures were set up – such as some four generation pictures with Grandpa Dick, Grandpa Brent, Kevin, and our boys.

Then we made sure to take a few pictures for Kevin’s memory.  We never know how long we’ll get to keep Grandpa and Grandma or how long they will live in that house.  I made sure to get a picture of the railing by the back door … Grandpa made it from wooden baseball bats.

And a good shot of the front of the house (that’s the deck they painted).

And a couple on this cool swing under the hazelnut tree (which we were told, more than once, how Grandma planted a single hazelnut and this huge, beautiful tree is now the result).

I may not have done any of the physical labor (unless you consider making sandwiches one-handed because Tommy was adamant about being held physical labor), but it just felt good to know that Kevin was a big help.  He helped Grandpa Dick get a project finished that he started a long time ago.

See how happy the service makes Kevin?!
