Time With Grandpa Dick

Toward the end of June, the boys’ great-grandpa came and stayed with us for a few days.  We affectionately call him “Grandpa Dick.”

We spent a lot of time listening to his stories and he seemed to enjoy just watching the boys play.

Grandpa Dick was a great catcher in his day and, even though he will be 90 in October, he took some time to give the boys a few pointers …

Grandpa would probably hate me saying this, but it was really sweet watching him teach Billy.

The last morning Grandpa Dick was with us, the boys and I took him for a drive over to Antelope Island.  I didn’t realize he’d never been there before or we would have gone when we could have spent more time.

We got to see a lot of bison (buffalo) as we drove over to the historical working ranch.  (As a side note, for a few weeks after our trip to the island, whenever Tommy would see a cow in the fields near our house, he would point and shout “Buffalo!”)  The ranch was in the process of restoring its old sheep shearing barn and Grandpa Dick had a great conversation with the restoration-dude about it.

We didn’t get to stay very long because Grandpa had a reunion to be to, but it was fun looking at the artifacts and him telling us about ones that he had actually used when he was younger.

Grandpa enjoyed it.

The boys enjoyed it.

I enjoyed it.

I deem that field trip a success.

A couple of days later we met back up with Grandpa Dick and Grandpa Brent and Grandma Jeanne at the Oral Pendleton Family Reunion (Oral was Grandpa Dick’s dad).  The reunion was at Rock Canyon Park in Provo.

We met Grandpa’s half siblings and some of their children, played on a playground, and ate a pretty good lunch.   There were even balloons for the boys (cough: Kevin) to play with .

The boys wanted to go hiking and exploring, but we only did a little – too hot and too big of a belly on my part, sorry boys!

When it was time to go, we tried to get a few of those generational pictures … the four generations (above), the three generations …

A different three generations …

And, since we aren’t sure when we’ll get to see our beloved Grandpa Dick again, pictures of the boys giving him some love …
